In the early 1980s, the old flume route was choked with fallen trees, boulders, and sections of abandoned aluminum pipe (left from a failed attempt to reopen the tunnel in 1963). The Flume Trail follows the original flume from the dam to the tunnel - a route once traveled by caretakers who rode atop flume boxes on bicycles. Originally built in 1877, the tunnel eventually collapsed and the route was abandoned. This historical marker was erected by Nevada State Parks. , Although the Flume Trail has been "tamed," it has lost none of its fun, exhilaration, and the awesome scenery that Max Jones uncovered in the early 1980s. The funds were used for trail improvements and education. Recycling the old aluminum pipe netted $7,000. In 1993, the abandoned pipe was flown out voluntarily by National Guard helicopters. , Spurred by the trail's new popularity, Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park staff joined volunteers in further clearing the route. At least 2 liters or more per rider.The Flume Trail. Because of all the walking it tooks us a long time, so give yourself plenty of time if you think you will need it. At the end, there is a 3 mile downhill, which is very sandy, was a good practice for the kids to keep control of the bikes. We asked our kids to walk sections of that trail, just to feel better. i can definetly see a mistake been very costly. ![]() the ride itself is not difficult, but with the amazing views, it also has amazing cliffs, right next to the bike path, which is a few feet wide and sandy. There is were we felt worried about our kids. The road continues to the flume trail which is a 4 mile flat trail. It ends at the lake, so you can spend some time relaxing there. 8 miles downhill, that is not difficult at all. Needless to say, we pushed ours (and our kids) most of the way up. We saw plenty of fit bikers pushing their bikes, in special the last mile. ![]() I would describe it as moderate to step uphill. The first part of the ride is a 4 mile uphill to lake marlette. Its is described as moderate ride, so we took our two 11 year old kids with Us. Its a wonderful ride, and the views are just amazing.
